Vitalik Buterin Declares Ethereum (ETH) a Store of Value, Not Fee-Burning Token
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has declared the cryptocurrency a store of value rather than a fee-burning token, a shift that comes as the network faces technical challenges and market uncertainty.
Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder of Ethereum, has publicly redefined the cryptocurrency's purpose, asserting that ETH is a store of value rather than a token designed to burn transaction fees. This declaration, made at a time when the asset was trading at $2,240, signals a major philosophical and economic shift for the second-largest blockchain by market capitalization.
The announcement comes at a critical juncture for the network, which recently encountered a significant setback with the Glamsterdam hard fork. The testnet launch revealed a dangerous bug in the fee recalculating mechanism, which brutally broke the logic in smart contracts and halted the planned upgrade.
Buterin's stance directly challenges the prevailing narrative that Ethereum's value is tied to the amount of gas burned through its EIP-1559 mechanism. He argues that this approach is a dead end for a blockchain layer worth $270 billion and that attempts to build evaluation on fee burning are fundamentally flawed.
A New Technical Roadmap
In response to the failed hard fork and the changing economic landscape, the Ethereum community is pivoting toward a new technical roadmap. Ecosystem builders are now preparing to expand Layer 1 capacity with the help of two new proposals: EIP-8037, which focuses on tariff calibration, and EIP-7928, which aims for parallel production.
The primary goal of these upgrades is to raise the gas limit to 200 million units. The logic behind this expansion is that an excess of blockspace will cheapen transactions, while token burning rates will gradually be cut. This approach prioritizes network utility and accessibility over deflationary metrics.
The historical peaks of burning through EIP-1559 'never were as strong as they seemed'. They were dependent on inner cyclical activity of crypto speculations. And it itself was falling once every bear market started.
Beyond Deflationary Metrics
Buterin warns that attempts to squeeze a premium out of the protocol by any means would push the system toward overly aggressive management and interventions. He argues that such a path would require Ethereum to become a centralized commercial project with inflated costs on research and development.
Instead, the network should focus on what Buterin calls CROPS: censorship and capture resistance, open source, privacy, and security. This framework provides a more stable foundation for the asset's value proposition, particularly in the face of rising regulatory scrutiny and the rapid growth of artificial intelligence.
The Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko has also aligned with Buterin on this matter, calling the focus on fees 'absolutely meaningless'. Yakovenko emphasizes that a blockchain network must generate real value for end users rather than trying to control the price of getting into a block.
Vitalik is absolutely right that you can’t focus on fees as the product. That’s absolutely meaningless. You need to pick a product, the thing that brings value to people, and do that really well.
Stability Over Speculation
Despite the technical setbacks and the pivot in strategy, the Ethereum Foundation is committed to a long-term vision of stability. The network is opting for a 'boring' stability of the basic layer, avoiding the flirtation with market through deflationary records.
EIP-1559 is not going anywhere, and Buterin has openly stated that users should not be 'sad' if the volume of gas burned will forever stay below the 10% mark. The source of value for Ethereum, according to its visionary, lies in a completely different dimension.
This shift in perspective could have profound implications for the cryptocurrency's future, potentially attracting a different class of investors focused on long-term value retention rather than short-term trading gains.
