Good Luck Getting a Cheap GPU. AMD Is a 'Data Center First Company,' CEO Says - Yahoo Finance
AMD's CEO Lisa Su told Yahoo Finance that the company is a 'data center first company' and expects its data center business to grow by another 50% over the next three months.
AMD's Lisa Su emphasized that the company's profile is firmly rooted in data centers, a focus that is driving its growth and profitability.
She stated, 'We are a data center first company; that is our profile,' and expressed her ambition to be the best partner for the largest users of compute in the world.
I want to be the best partner to the largest users of compute in the world, given that 'AI and superintelligence [are] becoming more and more essential to every aspect of our lives and...business.'
This strategic shift is reflected in AMD's financial performance, which saw a record $13.4 billion in Q3, with 63% of that revenue coming from its data center business.
The company's resources are being directed toward expanding its supply to help customers, a move that has fueled this tremendous growth.
Consumer Graphics Cards Face Price Hikes
The company's focus on data centers is not good news for consumers seeking affordable graphics cards, as prices have exploded in recent months.
Nvidia's RTX 5090 has all but disappeared from online retailers, and its 5080 model is selling for far above its MSRP.
AMD's flagship RX 9070 XT is currently over $900, while the non-XT model is around $750, both significantly above their launch prices.
Even entry-level cards like the RX 9060 XT with 16GB of VRAM are now over $700, with only the 8GB cards remaining remotely affordable at over $500.
