U.S. urges global action after North Korea-linked Binance crypto theft - Korea JoongAng Daily
The United States has urged international cooperation to combat North Korea's cyber activities following a massive cryptocurrency theft from Binance.
The U.S. State Department urged governments to work together to curb the Democratic People's Republic of Korea's (DPRK) cyber threat and its illicit revenue generation. This call for action follows the attribution of a major cryptocurrency theft to North Korean actors by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation.
The State Department spokesperson stressed the importance of enforcing existing international sanctions and taking proactive measures to prevent Pyongyang from financing its unlawful weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile programs.
We expect all UN member states to enforce existing sanctions and take proactive measures to prevent the DPRK from funding its unlawful WMD and ballistic missile programs.
The remarks were made in response to an inquiry about potential coordination between Washington and Seoul on additional sanctions following the hack of Binance.
South Korea reviews options
A South Korean Ministry of Unification official stated that Seoul had not yet begun discussing sanctions over the incident because the circumstances surrounding the theft had not been fully established.
Separately, the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it was reviewing possible additional measures internally, including unilateral cyber sanctions, but had not made a decision.
The U.S. State Department did not directly address whether Washington had shared investigative findings with Seoul or held bilateral discussions on additional sanctions in connection with the incident.
