Japan Announces Emergency Cybersecurity Package Following a Wave of Attacks - SecurityWeek
Japan has announced an emergency cybersecurity package worth 10 billion yen ($63 million) following a wave of massive data breaches affecting major companies and government agencies.
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi emphasized the need for rapid response capabilities in the era of AI-generated attacks during a ministerial meeting Friday. The announcement follows dozens of cyber incidents that have caused significant disruption to daily life and business operations across Japan.
Active Defense Measures
The package includes enhanced capabilities for accessing hacker servers through 'active cyber defense,' a practice legalized in October. This preemptive measure aims to identify and neutralize threats before they can cause damage.
In cases threatening national security, Japan will deploy a support team comprising officials from the Defense Ministry, National Police Agency, and National Cybersecurity Office.
Expert Teams
By the end of November, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry will establish a 'top gun' team of cybersecurity experts who will utilize AI to counter hackers and identify network vulnerabilities. These specialists will collaborate with technology companies and international AI developers to maintain cutting-edge security practices.
Rescue Operations
A 'cyber rescue team' composed of public and private sector experts will provide immediate assistance to companies affected by cyberattacks. Additionally, a separate team will help vulnerable organizations strengthen their defenses against potential breaches.
