HyprBSD, a new FreeBSD distribution, provides a Wayland-based desktop experience with full Steam gaming support, addressing the operating system's desktop limitations.

While FreeBSD has been working to improve its desktop and laptop experience, those efforts aren't yet available in released form. HyprBSD emerges as a new solution, offering a Wayland-based desktop experience with Steam gaming support through FreeBSD's Linux binary compatibility layer.

IT consultant and 25+ year FreeBSD admin Sam Sheridan created HyprBSD after becoming frustrated with FreeBSD's out-of-the-box desktop experience, particularly around NVIDIA graphics drivers. Other FreeBSD desktop efforts have included PC-BSD/TrueOS, helloSystem, and the ongoing GhostBSD project.

Technical Features

HyprBSD is based on FreeBSD 15.1-RELEASE and includes a graphical installer that can set up a system in about three minutes. It supports AMD, Intel, and NVIDIA graphics, using the Hyprland compositor for its Wayland-based desktop experience.

The distribution enables Steam gaming through FreeBSD's Linux compatibility layer, with verified support for various games including those protected by Battleye. XWayland is also supported for X11-dependent software.

Current Status

While many of HyprBSD's modifications can be applied to stock FreeBSD, the project focuses on providing a smoother, more polished out-of-the-box user experience. Various fixes to FreeBSD have been implemented as part of this initiative to enhance the operating system's desktop capabilities.

HyprBSD is currently available in release candidate form, with interested users able to learn more at HyprBSD.org. The project represents a significant step forward for FreeBSD's desktop accessibility, particularly for gaming enthusiasts.
