Journalists caught NVIDIA lying. RTX 30 is capable of more than the company claimed - iXBT.games
Journalists at Hardware Unboxed have proven that NVIDIA falsely claimed Frame Generation was technically impossible on GeForce RTX 30 graphics cards, as a third-party mod successfully enables the feature.
For years, NVIDIA maintained that Frame Generation was technically impossible on GeForce RTX 30 graphics cards. However, Hardware Unboxed journalists have definitively proven this claim false by testing a third-party mod that successfully enables the feature on older hardware.
Feature unlocked
Recent weeks have seen the emergence of mods claiming to enable the original version of Frame Generation on RTX 20 and RTX 30 series graphics cards. Hardware Unboxed's testing confirmed these claims, revealing that the technology works identically to the native implementation on newer cards.
This is not some other variety of Frame Generation that merely mimics the real thing. It looks like we are looking at the genuine technology.
Performance impact
The most significant finding is that frame pacing smoothness with the mod matches the native Frame Generation on RTX 40 and RTX 50 cards. GPU load is also practically identical, indicating no performance penalty for using the unlocked feature on older hardware.
This discovery directly contradicts NVIDIA's previous statements and suggests the company artificially restricted access to Frame Generation on RTX 30 cards without technical justification, effectively turning its back on early adopters.
How to enable
The MFG Unlocker mod works as a plugin for OptiScaler. Owners of RTX 30 series cards can download it and follow installation instructions available on GitHub to access the previously denied feature.
