FBI agent pleads guilty to stealing $2.4 million in crypto from nation-state hackers
A senior FBI official pleaded guilty to stealing over $2.4 million in cryptocurrency from wallets controlled by nation-state hackers and crime victims.
Yaroch, 37, admitted to using his seniority in the FBI's Counterintelligence and Espionage Division to steal cryptocurrency from at least two adversarial nations and 10 crime victims. The transfers began in December 2024 and totaled more than $2.4 million.
The agent had accumulated hundreds of thousands of dollars in credit card debt, loans, and car payments, which he used the stolen funds to pay off. ChatGPT conversations revealed his plans to buy a vineyard in Portugal and retire there.
Motivation and Confession
Yaroch confessed to a DOJ employee in July, expressing shame over his actions. He became frustrated when he couldn't disrupt a suspect from an unnamed adversarial nation's cryptocurrency use.
Yaroch said it was 'eating him up inside' and he wanted to 'get it off his chest'
Investigation Impact
Prosecutors revealed Yaroch's thefts ranged from 81 cents to over $580,000 per transfer. His actions compromised multiple FBI investigations related to both criminal groups and nation-state adversaries, exposing the bureau's sources and methods to targets.
Yaroch will be sentenced in March, with prosecutors recommending a prison sentence of up to 20 years for wire fraud and money laundering charges.
