Greece approves 10% tax on crypto gains and 15% levy on DeFi income - Cryptonews.net
Greece's parliament has approved a new tax framework for cryptocurrencies, introducing a 10% tax on capital gains and a 15% levy on income from staking and decentralized finance (DeFi).
The legislation sets a threshold of 500 euros for individuals, meaning only gains above this amount will be taxed at 10%. Notably, the tax applies not only when selling crypto for cash but also when using cryptocurrencies to purchase goods or services.
DeFi Taxation
Returns from staking, crypto lending, and providing liquidity to DeFi platforms will be treated as interest income and taxed at 15%, according to the Finance Ministry.
The tax also applies when investors use crypto to buy goods or services, not just when they sell it for cash.
Losses and Transitions
Investors with annual crypto losses exceeding 500 euros can carry them forward for five years to offset future gains. The law provides a 12-month window for declaring past crypto gains without penalties, with tax payments due within 60 days of declaration.
While swapping one cryptocurrency for another will not trigger tax, parliament's Scientific Service warned that the bill's wording could potentially cover such trades.
