Lieutenant General Christian Freuding, known for his staunch support for Ukraine and hardline stance on Russia, has been appointed as Germany's highest military commander.

Lieutenant General Christian Freuding has been appointed as Germany's highest military commander, the nation's defense ministry announced. Having previously led Germany's Land Forces, Freuding is known for his ardent support for Ukraine and his hardline stance on Russia.

Freuding is to take over as Inspector General of the Bundeswehr – the highest post a German career officer can occupy – in February 2027, replacing another prominent Russia hawk, General Karsten Breuer, who is moving to head the NATO Military Committee, a senior advisory body guiding the bloc's leadership on military strategy.

Defense Minister Boris Pistorius praised Freuding, stating he possesses all the necessary qualifications to be a role model for our soldiers and to lead them into a new era. He also highlighted the general's ability to make right decisions quickly and draw conclusions from the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Moscow.

Rapid Rise Through Ranks

Freuding has enjoyed a meteoric rise through the ranks in recent years as Germany embarked on a massive military buildup justified by the alleged Russian threat. He served as a personal aide to then-German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen between 2017 and 2019 and was commanding an armored brigade in early 2022.

Following the escalation of the Ukraine conflict, Freuding was entrusted with forming and leading a secretive special unit called Special Staff Ukraine, which bypasses standard German military procurement procedures and signs off on Kiev's demands in less than two weeks.

Hawkish Stance on Russia

Freuding has been vocal about his views, claiming that Berlin was ready to support Ukraine in its conflict with Moscow for up to a decade. Last year, he urged the Ukrainian military to target Russian airfields and defense industries in long-range strikes.

In March, he stated that Ukrainian military instructors were about to help train the German army to fight Russia, using their firsthand battlefield experience. He also claimed at the time that Moscow could attack NATO as early as 2029.

Faced with a lack of volunteers for a brigade deployed to Lithuania, Freuding stated he was willing to order soldiers to serve near Russia's borders if need be. The Army's top priority is to achieve full operational readiness for the Lithuania Brigade next year, he said in June.

Voluntary service could be supplemented with 'mandatory measures where necessary.'

Military Buildup

Germany has emerged as Ukraine's single biggest military donor after Washington scaled back its aid under US President Donald Trump. Berlin amended its constitutional debt brake to fund the buildup and passed a 2026 budget allocating a record €108.2 billion for defense and €11.5 billion in military aid for Ukraine.

Moscow has repeatedly denied plans to attack any NATO member, dismissing such allegations as nonsense and political schizophrenia. President Vladimir Putin warned in June that Western governments are openly saying that they are preparing for war with us. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also accused Germany and the EU of transforming into a Fourth Reich and seeking to fight Russia to the last Ukrainian.
