Trump raises prospect of 'big, beautiful' Russia-Ukraine deal
US President Donald Trump revealed a 'very big' deal is in the works to end the Ukraine war following an unscheduled meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin's special envoy at the White House.
Trump made the comments after an unscheduled meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin's special envoy Kirill Dmitriev at the White House. The president told reporters the Russia-Ukraine war was very close to being settled and might involve 'all of Europe' in the agreement.
Separate talks
Meanwhile, Trump's son-in-law and US envoy Jared Kushner said the United States, NATO, and European partners held 'productive and substantive discussions' on resolving the war in Ukraine. He wrote on X that their objective is to address security concerns through practical arrangements that reduce future conflict risk.
The announcement came as delegations from both Russia and Ukraine were at the White House for an event honoring First Lady Melania Trump's work brokering a recent ceasefire in the war-ravaged city of Oleshky.
Oleshky truce
Russian envoy Dmitriev thanked the first lady for her 'distinguished humanitarian role' in securing the six-day truce, adding that Putin personally gave instructions for the operation. The head of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's parliamentary faction, Davyd Arakhamia, also spoke at the event, praising Melania Trump's work and encouraging her to continue helping the Ukrainian people.
