The Nura Project has announced significant organizational changes, including the formation of a legal entity and the introduction of a new Wayland-based UI called Catacomb, optimized for low-end mobile devices. The project representatives recently attended the Fall OpenSource Conference in Tokyo, Japan, where they showcased devices running Plasma Mobile and Phosh, distributing approximately 50 leaflets about the project's recent rename.

Organizational Changes

Following the introduction of the Nura Project ASBL in September, the organization has integrated this legal entity into its processes and documentation, making the statutes publicly accessible in English. The previous Core and Trusted Contributors model has been replaced with assembly membership, and associated application and documentation processes have been updated accordingly.

A conflict of interest policy has also been implemented to ensure decisions prioritize the project's best interests and prevent potential benefits for individuals in positions of power. These changes mark a significant step in the project's organizational development.

Technical Updates

The mobile-config-firefox project has released versions 5.5.0, 5.5.1, and 5.5.2, adding support for Firefox versions up to 159 and improving support for ESR version 153. These releases also introduce initial flatpak support, extending benefits beyond the Nura ecosystem.

For Qualcomm devices, the q6voiced project aimed at improving the audio stack has faced delays due to circumstances beyond the team's control. Initial analysis and architectural redesign are now expected to be completed by December 2026.

Unfortunately, due to circumstances out of our control, the initial analysis and architectural redesign has been delayed, and they probably won't come until December this year.

New UI and Community

Catacomb, a new Wayland-based UI designed specifically for Linux Mobile, has been packaged for both Alpine and Nura distributions. This UI is optimized for battery life on low-end hardware with minimal system requirements, making it suitable for devices that may not support more demanding interfaces.

The project has also updated promotional materials in English and Japanese to reflect the new name and status. Images for the Radxa Dragon Q6A device have been published, and the team is preparing for FOSDEM 2027, where their Mainline Linux on Mobile devroom has been accepted with an open Call for Papers.

Looking ahead, the project plans to publish a financial update with changes to OpenCollective as their relationship with their fiscal host evolves. They are also seeking community assistance for testing the upcoming release and translating leaflets into German and French.
