‘Dark horse diplomat’: Melania Trump plays both sides in joint Russia-Ukraine White House visit
Melania Trump welcomed senior Russian and Ukrainian officials at the White House to celebrate a ceasefire in Oleshky, becoming an unlikely diplomatic broker in the ongoing conflict.
Beaming from a podium in the White House's Grand Foyer, Melania Trump welcomed senior Russian and Ukrainian officials on Thursday to celebrate a ceasefire in Oleshky, a frontline Ukrainian town now occupied by Russia. The evacuation of 800 people from the embattled town, which had endured a protracted humanitarian crisis, may seem like a sideshow at this point in the war, as Russian missiles and drones continue to rain down on Kyiv and other major cities.
The meeting represented real diplomatic significance, with Trump playing host to one of the highest-level gatherings of Russian and Ukrainian officials in recent months. Kirill Dmitriev, the sanctioned head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, was seated next to Davyd Arakhamia, the head of Volodymyr Zelenskyy's Servant of the People party and a chief negotiator for Ukraine.
Unlikely Diplomat
Ukraine's Dmytro Lubinets and Russia's Yana Lantratova, the respective human rights ombudspeople, also attended the meeting. The gathering came after a particularly bitter public feud between Zelenskyy and Trump, as the US cut intelligence sharing and satellite Internet in recent weeks in an apparent effort to pressure Kyiv into capitulating.
This unprecedented gathering marks the first time in US history that an American first lady has personally brought representatives of two nations actively at war together at the White House to pursue diplomatic and humanitarian objectives.
Awards and Recognition
Both sides lavished praise on Trump for her diplomatic acumen, delivering her state awards and gifting her trinkets of thanks from the residents of Oleshky. A children's drawing gifted by the Russian side was inscribed: "I love Melania." Dmitriev extended her a personal expression of gratitude from Vladimir Putin, while Lubinets presented her with the order of Princess Olga, first class – one of Ukraine's highest honours.
Trump has increasingly engaged in humanitarian efforts related to the conflict, first by working on a program that reunified more than 30 children displaced from their families during the conflict. In Oleshky, she claimed to have been involved in "every stage" of the planning, including reviewing de-mining plans, aerial images, and assessing evacuation routes.
Call for Peace
Stepping into the role of diplomat and humanitarian, the first lady called for "humanity over war" and said that she hoped the limited ceasefire would "inspire greater peace." "Together, we can create something more enduring than a temporary ceasefire," she said. "Let us see Oleshky as a spark in a world of darkness, capable of illuminating the best in humanity."
Later, she handed personal letters to Dmitriev and Arakhamia to bring back to Putin and Zelenskyy. The Trump administration's plans with Russia are in peril after the midterms, with triumphant Democrats promising to investigate senior aides to Trump who had pitched Russia on business deals to end the war in Ukraine.
