Chainlink CustodySync lets institutions tap DeFi lending without leaving custody
On October 26, 2026, Chainlink announced CustodySync, allowing institutions to borrow against digital assets without leaving qualified custody, with Anchorage Digital Bank as the first launch partner.
Institutions have long sought the safety of regulated custodians combined with the liquidity of DeFi lending markets. CustodySync aims to deliver both by linking qualified custody records to on-chain lending protocols without requiring assets to leave custodial control.
The system functions as an integration layer between custodian collateral management systems and on-chain lending markets. Anchorage Digital Bank, the first federally chartered digital asset bank in the US, is pairing CustodySync with its Atlas Collateral Management product.
How the system works
CustodySync relies on three Chainlink services: Proof of Reserve, Data Feeds, and the Chainlink Runtime Environment. These services ensure custody records and lending protocols maintain agreement on balances, prices, and loan lifecycle events.
Proof of Reserve publishes custody balances on-chain, allowing protocols to verify collateral without taking possession. Instead of moving underlying assets, the system issues transfer-restricted receipt tokens that represent them.
Institutions should no longer have to pick between regulatory compliance through qualified custody and the liquidity available in on-chain markets.
Market implications
The launch addresses a significant gap in the market. While more than $80 billion is currently locked in DeFi lending markets, approximately $700 billion in digital assets sits with qualified custodians, largely unused for lending.
Even a modest portion of this custodied capital could substantially increase on-chain liquidity relative to current DeFi lending volumes. Chainlink and Anchorage haven't disclosed specific borrowing volumes or named borrowers at launch, making early adoption metrics the first key indicator of success.
