Melania Trump hosts Russian and Ukrainian envoys at White House
First Lady Melania Trump hosted representatives from Russia and Ukraine at the White House for talks following a humanitarian ceasefire in Alyoshki that she helped coordinate.
The gathering in Washington, DC comes after a temporary humanitarian ceasefire in Alyoshki, a city in Russia's Kherson region, was coordinated with the first lady's involvement. The White House announced the meeting on November 3, calling it an "extraordinary moment in American history." Melania Trump independently initiated contact between the two countries and helped secure the truce.
Participants and Evacuations
Russia sent Human Rights Commissioner Yana Lantratova and Special Presidential Envoy Kirill Dmitriev, while Ukraine appointed Human Rights Commissioner Dmitry Lubinets and David Arakhamia, head of the ruling Servant of the People parliamentary faction. The six-day truce, which expired on November 5, enabled Russian and Ukrainian humanitarian teams to deliver essential supplies and evacuate nearly 800 residents.
Discussions were underway on organizing regular humanitarian missions to Alyoshki with the first lady's mediation, potentially allowing aid deliveries every month.
Upcoming Negotiations
The meeting precedes another round of US-mediated negotiations between Moscow and Kiev, scheduled for November 10-11 in Abu Dhabi. During the truce, civilians were offered the choice of relocating to another city in Russia or traveling to Ukraine via Russia and Belarus, with both sides overseeing the evacuations.
