Poland arrests four over alleged spying for Russia
Polish authorities have arrested six people, charging four with espionage for allegedly supplying military components to Russia despite an embargo.
Polish authorities announced Thursday they had arrested six individuals over alleged military component shipments to Russia, with four specifically charged with espionage. Investigators claim the group illegally supplied Moscow with significant quantities of parts used to manufacture ammunition and weapons systems despite an international embargo.
Espionage charges
Four suspects, including a Russian woman, were formally charged with espionage and placed in pretrial detention for three months, according to Poland's Internal Security Agency (ABW). The remaining two individuals are subject to non-custodial restrictions while the investigation continues.
Russia is subject to a strict embargo in this area, and this operation was designed to circumvent it.
Trade violations
All six suspects face additional allegations of violating international trade regulations governing goods and technologies of strategic importance to national defense and security. The suspects consist of five Polish nationals aged 25 to 52 and a 37-year-old Russian woman, as confirmed by intelligence coordinator Tomasz Siemoniak.
