Sudan, Ethiopia order tit-for-tat diplomatic expulsions
Ethiopia has ordered six Sudanese diplomats to leave within 48 hours and closed Sudan's consulate in Asosa, escalating tensions between the neighboring countries.
The orders came on Tuesday as Sudan accuses Ethiopia of allowing the RSF paramilitary group to use Ethiopian territory to launch drone attacks on civilian infrastructure. Ethiopia counters by claiming Sudan backs rebels in its northern Tigray region.
Diplomatic Complaints
On Sunday, Sudan lodged a formal complaint against Ethiopia with both the United Nations Security Council and the African Union's Peace and Security Council regarding the alleged drone attacks.
Regional Tensions
Sudan's military has repeatedly accused Ethiopia of aiding the RSF, which it has been fighting in a civil war since April 2023. Ethiopia denies supporting the RSF in Sudan's conflict.
Meanwhile, Ethiopia has accused the Sudanese military of backing Tigrayan rebels, while also claiming Egypt and Eritrea support these rebels. All three countries have rejected the accusations. Ethiopia previously expelled 10 Eritrean diplomats and an Egyptian diplomat.
