SpaceX taps Qualcomm to build ground network for Starlink Mobile
SpaceX has signed a multiyear deal with Qualcomm to supply core network technology for Starlink Mobile, aiming to compete with Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile.
The terrestrial network is designed to complement Starlink's satellite capabilities, with rollout planned to begin next year. Neither company disclosed financial terms of the deal announced on November 4, 2026.
Network Technology
The deal centers on Qualcomm's Dragonwing platforms, specifically the QRU100 radio unit and the QDU100 distributed unit. These components form the core of base stations that will use high-capacity Massive MIMO technology in a 64T64R configuration.
The deployment is expected to start in 2027 and cover tens of thousands of sites across the United States.
Strategic Moves
In October 2026, SpaceX acquired low-band 800 MHz spectrum from Grain Management for approximately $8 billion, a transaction still pending FCC approval. The FCC has also authorized SpaceX to launch an additional 15,000 next-generation V2 satellites for higher bandwidth connectivity.
Market Impact
For Qualcomm, the deal provides a high-profile infrastructure customer as the chipmaker promotes its Dragonwing brand in network equipment. While the financial terms remain undisclosed, the deployment spanning tens of thousands of sites offers significant visibility.
Key milestones to watch include the FCC's decision on the $8 billion spectrum acquisition and the execution of the deployment timeline, which faces challenges in permitting, construction and powering thousands of sites by 2027.
