Unreal Engine Overhaul: Lead Programmer Reveals The Extreme Optimization Behind Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds
Lead Programmer Shigeki Watanabe has revealed extreme optimization techniques used in Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds to ensure smooth performance across consoles and PC.
In a recent Sonic Channel staff profile, Lead Programmer Shigeki Watanabe detailed the extensive technical work required to maintain smooth performance across platforms for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds. Standard Unreal Engine tools proved insufficient for the development team's needs, prompting Watanabe to support and extend the engine.
Deep Engine Modifications
The team measured processing loads across different platforms, adjusted settings, and disabled unused features to optimize performance. However, core systems like physics calculations couldn't be simply turned off due to their connections with other features. Watanabe went directly into Unreal Engine's source code to exclude unnecessary processing overhead that existed even when features weren't actively being used.
Developer Background
Watanabe has previously worked on Wonderland Wars, Sonic Frontiers, and Sonic X Shadow Generations. His programming interests extend beyond his professional work, as he experiments with different programming languages at home. When not coding, he enjoys motorcycle touring across Japan on his Yamaha SR400, which has sometimes helped him identify unrealistic vehicle behavior in racing games.
