The GIMP development team has released version 3.2.8, a stable update that includes numerous bug fixes, security patches, and user experience improvements from both new and long-time contributors.

The latest stable version of GIMP, the popular open-source image editor, has been released with version 3.2.8. This update brings significant improvements to the software's functionality, user interface, and security measures, building upon the foundation of GIMP 3.2.6. The development team has worked extensively to address various issues reported by the community while also introducing new features that enhance the overall user experience.

One of the most notable improvements in this release is the enhanced support for Right-to-Left (RTL) text languages. Infinity, a newer contributor to the project, implemented several improvements to the text tool, including better cursor movement when editing RTL text and improved handling of mixed Left-to-Right and Right-to-Left text. The update also introduces new icons for text directions and automatic detection of base text direction according to Unicode standards.

User Experience Improvements

The development team has focused on refining the user interface and fixing long-standing issues. Jehan addressed a bug introduced in the previous version related to copying non-rectangular selections from layer groups. Bruno Lopes corrected cursor coordinate display issues in the status bar when switching between applications and improved dialog positioning for users with multiple monitors.

Performance optimizations were implemented by Manu Cornet, who improved gradient drawing for large images (over 6000x6000 pixels) and made the selection outline display more efficient. Harsh Verma contributed a new GUI testing suite to help prevent regressions during development, while Jehan improved font-loading code to allow early cancellation and faster shutdown times.

Platform-Specific Updates

GIMP 3.2.8 includes several improvements specific to different operating systems. On macOS, title bars now display background colors correctly on version 27+, and the ScreenCaptureKit API is now used for taking screenshots on version 14+. The longstanding 'Blank UI' bug affecting some macOS computers has been fixed, and transparency is now properly maintained when copying images between applications.

Windows users benefit from improved compatibility with the Unified Print Dialog in Windows 11 and better handling of HDR displays for screenshots. The AppImage compatibility was enhanced to support installing Python Wheels from pip, similar to Flatpak and Snap packages.

Security Enhancements

The development team has proactively addressed security issues reported through various scanning and testing programs. Jacob Boerema, Alx Sa, and new contributors Mike Gorse, Dirk Müller, and Alynx Zhou patched reported vulnerabilities. Most issues related to image plug-ins being overly trusting of image size data, which could potentially cause crashes but not compromise user data.

We take security seriously, but this is not quite as scary as it first sounds. There are no personal accounts or banking information to exploit since we of course don't access or store that information!

Documentation and Community

Bruno Lopes contributed two new tutorials on internationalizing plug-ins and filters, which will be particularly valuable as GIMP works toward creating a built-in Extension repository for easy installation of plugins and scripts. Two new mirrors from Randhost in Portugal and ZEROLAG in Romania have been added to improve download speeds worldwide.

The release statistics show significant community involvement, with 27 people contributing to the codebase across various areas including core development, plugins, translations, and packaging. Since GIMP 3.2.6, the team has closed 82 bug reports, merged 46 pull requests, and pushed 300 commits to the main repository. Eleven translations were updated, reflecting the global nature of the GIMP user base.
