Marvell to acquire Lumentum in $115 billion AI connectivity deal
Marvell Technology announced Monday it would acquire Lumentum Holdings in a $115 billion deal, one of the largest tech industry acquisitions ever.
The acquisition combines Marvell's data infrastructure semiconductor products with Lumentum's manufacturing of lasers, circuit switches and other components used in data centers. Marvell believes this merger will position the enlarged company as a "category leader in AI connectivity."
Market Reaction
Despite Marvell's confidence in the deal's strategic value, markets have shown uncertainty. Marvell shares dropped more than 1% before market opening, while Lumentum fell almost 3% following the announcement of the all-stock transaction.
Competitive Context
The companies that move first and help define this transition will set the standard for decades to come.
The acquisition comes amid significant AI infrastructure investments, with Nvidia having previously announced a $2 billion stake in Lumentum earlier this year. Marvell CEO Matt Murphy emphasized the "fundamental architectural shift toward optical connectivity" in AI infrastructure, calling it an opportunity that "comes along once in a generation."
