Open-source USB tool unlocks Nvidia's half-speed GPU AI limiter on Windows — lifts GPU's FP16 math performance up to 65%, UEFI unlocker covers RTX 20, 30, and 40-series desktops and laptops - Tom's Hardware
A new open-source UEFI tool boots from USB and unlocks significant extra tensor performance on RTX 20, 30, and 40-series GPUs, boosting FP16 math performance by up to 65% on Windows.
The "UEFI pre-driver NVIDIA GPU unlocker," or nv-uefi-unlocker project, removes Nvidia's tensor limiter using the community V67 payload with read-back verification. This trick allows Nvidia's signed Booter firmware to open the write lock on two speed-selector registers, enabling tensor units to run at full rate.
Previously, this unlock worked primarily through manually installed Linux modules, with Windows support only experimental. The new USB-based approach makes it accessible to Windows users without complex modifications.
Performance boost
The tool runs from a FAT32 USB drive before the Nvidia driver loads at every boot. According to the developer, their own laptop RTX 4060 achieved 65% higher FP16 math performance after using the tool.
The unlock can now run entirely from a bootable USB drive, on Windows as well as Linux, whereas previously it worked primarily through manually installed Linux modules, with Windows support only experimental.
Safety improvements
The read-back verification feature makes the process safer than previous experimental builds, addressing safety concerns that existed with earlier versions of the unlock method.
This development represents a significant advancement for enthusiasts and professionals seeking maximum AI performance from their Nvidia GPUs without permanent hardware modifications.
