Democratic Rep. Haley Stevens endorsed her Republican rival Mike Rogers for Michigan Senate after being disinvited by Democrat Abdul El-Sayed from a unity event.

The endorsement came after El-Sayed disinvited Stevens from a campaign event meant to showcase party unity in the critical Senate race. Stevens had been critical of El-Sayed's unwillingness to condemn the overt antisemitism of some of his supporters. The unexpected endorsement announcement took place at a Detroit church on November 1, 2026.

The move has sent shockwaves through Democratic circles, particularly among El-Sayed's left-wing allies who have launched fierce attacks against Stevens, questioning her motives and loyalty to the party.

Left-wing backlash

Far-left streamer Hasan Piker attacked Stevens' motives in a post to X, claiming she was weirdly obsessed with Israel. Haley Stevens is not the spokesperson for democrats, she's not the spox for jewish people or black people, Piker said, accusing her of being a self interested striver.

She's clearly a disturbed, deranged, dishonest woman (less than 48 hours ago she was swearing to the NYT she was backing Abdul)

Mehdi Hasan, founder and editor-in-chief of Zeteo, went further, calling Stevens evil and accusing her of being a complete traitor who was motivated by Islamophobia. Former DNC Vice Chair David Hogg also attacked Stevens, urging Democrats to denounce her as the Republican she is. Former Obama aides and Pod Save America co-hosts Jon Lovett and Tommy Vietor criticized her as well.

Ad controversy

The endorsement followed a controversial ad by Rebellion PAC, founded by The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur, that depicted grocery shoppers blaming U.S. military support for Israel for high grocery prices. Stevens called the ad antisemitic and demanded El-Sayed condemn it. His campaign said it was not affiliated with the ad, and he subsequently said he disagreed with its contents.

Uygur defended the advertisement before Stevens' endorsement, disputing claims that it blamed Jewish people for grocery prices. Her only source of power is the Israeli lobby, Uygur claimed after the endorsement decision, suggesting Stevens had no popular support, just AIPAC money.

El-Sayed's response

El-Sayed addressed the ad controversy, saying his campaign did not produce the Rebellion PAC advertisement and that he disagreed with its contents. You guys love to play the condemn game. I've already been clear that that ad was not made by me, and I do not agree with the contents of that ad, El-Sayed said in a campaign press gaggle.

The Republican National Committee welcomed Stevens' decision, with RNC spokesman Hunter Lovell calling it demonstrates Rogers' appeal beyond Republican voters. Lovell claimed Rogers was building a winning coalition of Democrats, Independents, and Republicans to save Michigan from El-Sayed's radical, terrorist-sympathizing agenda.

Stevens' explanation

When asked how she could support a candidate whose positions directly opposed hers, Stevens responded simply: Nothing is perfect. The exchange was interrupted by a heckler who called Stevens a traitor. Fox News Digital also reported that Stevens' fiancé, Jason Turkish, and former campaign chairman David Kramer had already decided to vote for Rogers.
