Modded RTX 2080 Ti With 22 GB Memory Delivers Up To 73% Boost At 4K Compared To 11 GB Variant, Benchmarks Reveal - Wccftech
A modified GeForce RTX 2080 Ti with 22GB of VRAM delivers up to 73% better performance than the standard 11GB variant at 4K resolution, according to benchmarks by German publication PC Games Hardware.
The modified card, purchased from Alibaba, was created by replacing 1GB memory modules with 2GB Samsung GDDR6 chips in the eight-year-old Turing architecture GPU. While the original 11GB configuration was sufficient at launch, modern games now demand significantly more VRAM for consistent performance at high resolutions.
4K Performance Advantage
Testing revealed that at QHD/1440p resolution with DLSS set to Quality, both variants performed similarly. However, at 4K with DLSS Performance and FSR Frame Generation enabled, the 22GB model showed dramatic improvements. Flight Simulator 2024 achieved nearly 73% higher performance, while Spider-Man 2 delivered a solid 64% boost, crossing the 60 FPS mark.
The frametimes charts clearly showed how much of a difference adding twice the VRAM capacity made to gaming
Beyond Gaming Benefits
The increased VRAM wasn't just beneficial for gaming - AI workloads also executed significantly faster on the 22GB variant compared to the 11GB model. This demonstrates how memory capacity can impact various performance-intensive applications beyond just gaming.
