The FBI has attributed a $6.36 billion cryptocurrency theft from Binance on October 29 to North Korean hackers, calling it the largest such attack in history.

The FBI has accused North Korea of orchestrating the largest cryptocurrency theft in history, targeting Binance on October 29. The attack involved approximately $6.36 billion being transferred from Binance wallets across 10 blockchain networks, with most assets moved in roughly 20 minutes.

Working alongside the US Secret Service and the IRS Criminal Investigation division, the FBI attributed the theft to TraderTraitor operatives, who have begun converting the stolen funds primarily into Ethereum. The stolen assets are expected to undergo additional laundering through decentralized finance platforms and instant cryptocurrency exchange services.

Exchange responds to breach

Binance has pledged to cover customer losses, replenishing approximately 90% of the stolen cryptocurrency and setting aside about $6.34 billion in company funds. The exchange suspended withdrawals after the breach and is working to restore service.

Authorities seek industry cooperation

The FBI has called on cryptocurrency exchanges, blockchain operators, and digital asset service providers to help prevent the stolen funds from moving further. The bureau published an extensive list of cryptocurrency addresses associated with the theft and urged organizations to block transactions involving these wallets.

The alert specifically targeted THORNode operators, RPC node operators, instant exchanges, DeFi services, and blockchain analytics firms, reflecting concerns that hackers could exploit the decentralized nature of cryptocurrency transactions to obscure the origins of the stolen assets.
