Chainlink CustodySync: Custody Meets DeFi Lending - CryptoTicker.io
Chainlink has launched CustodySync, a product that allows crypto assets held by qualified custodians to be used as collateral in decentralized finance lending markets without the assets leaving the custodian.
The product aims to unlock liquidity for the approximately $700 billion in digital assets currently held by qualified custodians. It allows these assets to serve as collateral in DeFi lending markets, a segment that currently manages more than $30 billion in outstanding loans.
CustodySync is not a product for retail investors, but its launch clarifies the role of the LINK token and addresses key questions for all crypto holders, such as who controls the keys and how loans are treated for tax purposes.
How the system works
The process begins when an institution posts its custodied holdings. Chainlink's Proof of Reserve service publishes this information on-chain, creating a data point that lending protocols can read. A receipt token is then issued in the lending market, representing the custodied value.
The receipt token is transfer-restricted, meaning it can only be used within the specific lending market and cannot be freely traded or resold. This prevents a situation where a token representing custodied assets could be sold to put a claim on someone else's coins into circulation.
Loan funds are then transferred to the borrower in a single transaction. Repayments and accruing interest are recorded automatically in the custodian's records through the Chainlink Runtime Environment, which reconciles the loan state with the custodian's books.
Single price for both sides
A critical component of the system is the alignment of data sources. The lending market reads price data from Chainlink Data Feeds, which are on-chain. The same values are delivered via Chainlink Data Streams to the custodian's off-chain systems.
This ensures both parties calculate the same loan-to-value ratio from identical figures. Without this synchronization, different price sources could lead to conflicting LTV calculations, creating the risk of disputes precisely when speed is required.
Anchorage Digital as launch partner
Anchorage Digital Bank, the first federally chartered bank for digital assets in the United States, is the official launch partner. It acts as the collateral agent, responsible for realizing collateral if a loan breaches an agreed threshold.
Institutions should not have to choose between qualified custody and on-chain liquidity.
In an ordinary DeFi lending market, the realisation of collateral is carried out by a third party, often for a premium. The novelty of CustodySync is that the custodian itself performs this role.
Market reaction and token price
The LINK token stood at $11.86 on Wednesday morning, representing a 5.1 percent gain over the previous 24 hours. The token's market value is approximately $9.10 billion, ranking it 16th among all crypto assets.
Despite the positive price movement, the token remains 77.5 percent below its all-time high of $52.70, set in May 2021. Market analysts note that a price gain following a product announcement is not proof of a direct connection.
The actual uptake of CustodySync remains to be seen. While the market potential is estimated at $700 billion in custodied assets, the system's success depends on how many further custodians and lending protocols join the network.
