Violent clashes broke out in Cologne and Frankfurt on Saturday as Germany's nationwide Gen Z protests were disrupted by riots, resulting in injuries and arrests.

Riots erupted in Cologne on Saturday as approximately 200 people engaged in disturbances near the famous Cologne Cathedral. Police officers were attacked with bottles and bicycles on the cathedral square, leaving one person injured. Authorities detained five individuals, and a window at an art gallery was smashed when an electric scooter was thrown during the unrest.

Cologne's police chief Johannes Hermanns expressed deep disappointment that peaceful protests were overshadowed by 'extremists who had nothing but violence in mind.' Regional broadcaster WDR reported that groups beyond the Gen Z demonstrators were involved in the riots.

Frankfurt shopping street sealed

In Frankfurt, police sealed off Die Zeil, one of Germany's busiest shopping streets, after rioters smashed shop windows, looted stores, and attacked officers following a demonstration. Journalists witnessed people breaking into stores and stealing trainers and other goods. A specialist firearms shop was also targeted, prompting several arrests.

Anyone not involved who is still on the Zeil can leave. Access to the Zeil is no longer possible.

Police injuries and arrests

Several police officers were injured in Frankfurt during clashes with protesters following the Gen Z demonstration. Hesse Interior Minister Roman Poseck stated that about 100 attackers motivated by extreme leftist ideology staged a massive attack against police by throwing bottles, stones, and fireworks. One officer was potentially more seriously injured, though this requires further investigation.

In Hamburg, police estimated 6,700 participants in the demonstration, with some black-clad protesters pulling apart construction barriers and setting them on fire. Police used water cannons and pepper spray to disperse the crowd. In Berlin, the number of protesters grew from several hundred to around 5,000 at Brandenburg Gate, though organizers claimed 10,000 attendees.

Peaceful protests with underlying tensions

Despite the evening violence, most of Germany's Gen Z protests remained peaceful throughout the day. Senior police union representative Andreas Rosskopf noted that there was no widespread property damage 'so far,' describing the protests as 'very peaceful.' He attributed the confrontations to 'individuals acting independently, some of whom were masked.'

Thousands of young people demonstrated in 34 German cities under the 'Gen Z regelt' (Gen Z sorts it) slogan, protesting rising living expenses, Germany's remilitarization, and declining education quality. Many expressed anger over funds being directed toward military spending rather than education or social safety nets. Some protesters also called for Chancellor Friedrich Merz to step down.

Protester speaker Kaja Schwab criticized false political promises, stating that young people are told 'we will do well if we work hard enough' while facing unaffordable living costs and being 'forced into military service' amid Germany's renewed recruitment drive. Police reported smaller crowds than anticipated, with no nationwide turnout estimate immediately available, though more than 182,100 people had expressed interest online.
