The world's largest crypto exchange, Binance, was hacked on Thursday with more than $6 billion stolen from its system in a matter of minutes. Evidence points to North Korean hackers, who drained the accounts using methods consistent with their typical approach of targeting the weakest link in security systems.

To understand the challenges both hackers and law enforcement face in such cases, CNN spoke with Ilya Lichtenstein, a notorious hacker who orchestrated a $4.5 billion money-laundering scheme linked to the 2016 Bitfinex hack. Lichtenstein, who was released early from his five-year prison sentence this January, now claims to work as a 'white hat' hacker trying to stop cyberattacks.

Laundering the Loot

After successfully hacking an exchange, the real challenge begins for cybercriminals: laundering the stolen cryptocurrency. Lichtenstein explains that stolen crypto is like 'holding a hot potato' because blockchain technology allows for public visibility of all transactions.

They're holding a hot potato. So, these hackers in turn will have to try to move even faster to basically somehow take this money and either exchange it for legitimate money or mix it into a pile of money where you can't tell what's counterfeit and what's legitimate.

Hackers must quickly obfuscate the money trail by splitting funds into small pieces, shuffling them around, and moving them across different blockchains in a process called 'chain hopping.' This breaks up the transaction trail, making it harder for investigators to trace the origin of the funds.

AI Accelerates Threat

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence has emerged as a significant threat to crypto security. Lichtenstein warns that frontier AI models from companies like OpenAI and Anthropic are already capable of sophisticated hacking, and open-source versions could soon be accessible to anyone.

In a matter of months, he predicts, open-source AI models could surpass the capabilities of even the best human hackers, potentially putting such technology in the hands of anyone with basic technical skills. This democratization of advanced hacking tools could dramatically increase the frequency and sophistication of crypto attacks.

Despite these challenges, Binance has moved quickly to address the hack. In a statement on Saturday, the exchange announced it has covered '90%' of the stolen funds for customers and is 'on track to resume withdrawals within the previously stated timeframe.'
