Researchers have introduced the Deferred Cognitive Architecture (DCA), a three-tiered framework addressing computational bottlenecks and context degradation in large language models.

Modern large language models face significant challenges with quadratic computational complexity O(N²) as context lengths scale, leading to energy costs, latency, and context degradation known as "Lost in the Middle." The Deferred Cognitive Architecture (DCA) introduces a revolutionary approach by replacing monolithic execution with a modular, three-tiered framework governed by a "Retrieve-First, Think-Second" protocol.

Three-Tiered Architecture

The DCA consists of three distinct components. Tier 1 implements mechanical I/O and dynamic routing using ultra-lightweight models with O(1) lookup time. Tier 2 features asynchronous producer-consumer relays with non-blocking I/O queues, allowing dynamic vector store updates without re-indexing. Tier 3 contains the deferred reasoning engine that invokes high-parameter LLMs only after context payload is filtered.

This architecture achieves sub-linear O(k) computational complexity, 100% deterministic recall, and eliminates factual hallucinations caused by context clutter by reducing context overhead from N total tokens to k relevant tokens where k is much smaller than N.

Prototype Implementation

A reference prototype has been released demonstrating the DCA framework through a minimal Python implementation. The prototype includes all three tiers: the mechanical router for deterministic filtering, async relays for background queue ingestion, and the deferred reasoning engine that operates exclusively on pre-filtered payloads.

The complete implementation is available on GitHub, allowing developers to explore and potentially implement this architecture in their own AI systems. Researchers can cite the work using the provided DOI for academic references.
