Sculpt OS 26.10 Released - Now Powered By Genode's Custom Microkernel
Sculpt OS 26.10 debuted on Friday, now powered by Genode's custom microkernel instead of a third-party solution.
Sculpt OS 26.10 represents a major milestone for the operating system project born from the Genode initiative. The most significant change is the transition from using a third-party microkernel to Genode's own custom solution, designed specifically for the project's requirements.
Sculpt 26.10 is the first version based on Genode's custom microkernel instead of relying on a 3rd-party kernel. This kernel - designed from the ground up for the needs of Genode and Sculpt OS in particular - is not only more "micro" than any other of the microkernels supported by Genode, it also solves long-standing deficiencies concerning CPU scheduling and kernel-memory management. Sculpt OS finally stands on Genode's own footing!
New Features
Beyond the kernel transition, Sculpt OS 26.10 introduces several notable improvements. The operating system now includes VirtualBox 7 components for running in virtual machines, replacing the previous VirtualBox 6 support. Additionally, the update brings enhanced webcam handling and new support for UK keyboards.
The transition to Genode's custom microkernel addresses long-standing issues with CPU scheduling and kernel-memory management, potentially improving performance and stability for users.
