Sculpt OS 26.10 releases
Sculpt OS 26.10 is the first version based on Genode’s custom microkernel, marking a major architectural shift for the operating system.
The Sculpt OS 26.10 release brings several new features, including scalable cursors, support for UK keyboards, and better webcam support. However, the most significant change is the operating system's new foundation.
For the first time, Sculpt OS is built on Genode’s own custom microkernel, a design created specifically for the needs of the Genode and Sculpt OS projects. This new kernel is described as more 'micro' than other microkernels supported by Genode and addresses long-standing issues with CPU scheduling and kernel-memory management.
The release also completes the transition from XML to Genode’s own HID language for configuration and upgrades VirtualBox from version 6 to version 7. A whole slew of Linux-based drivers have also been upgraded.
A key feature of the new release is the inclusion of the Go programming language software development kit (Goa SDK) running directly on Sculpt OS without virtualization. This provides a wealth of tooling, including GCC, Binutils, Git, Sequoia, Expect, Curl, man, Make, and CMake.
This entails a wealth of tooling including GCC, Binutils, Git, Sequoia, Expect, Curl, man, Make, and CMake having landed on Genode.
While this self-hosted environment is still young and not yet time-tested, it demonstrates the potential of Genode and allows developers to gradually shift more of their development routine into the system.
