Poland: Protesters clash with police over sacked court chief
Protesters clashed with police outside Poland's Constitutional Court on Friday night after President Bogdan Swieczkowski and his deputy were suspended for one month.
The suspension was announced on the court's website, with fellow judge Anna Korwin-Piotrowska temporarily leading the institution. Warsaw police responded to a judge's alert about potential threats to court personnel.
Political tensions
Swieczkowski was appointed by the right-wing Law and Justice Party (PiS), which governed Poland from 2015 to 2023. After Tusk's center-left alliance won the 2023 election, they pledged to reverse PiS judicial reforms.
President's response
President Karol Nawrocki canceled a trip to Senegal, stating he must remain in Poland during the crisis. Nawrocki had previously refused to swear in five top court judges nominated by parliament, and Swieczkowski had denied them access to the court building after they took their oath before parliament instead.
