North Korean actors steal $6.36B from Binance in largest crypto theft in history - NK News
North Korean cybercriminals stole $6.36 billion in cryptocurrency from Binance on Thursday, marking the largest virtual theft in history, according to a U.S. blockchain analytics firm.
In a blog post, TRM Labs said the attacker drained funds from Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume, to wallets across 10 blockchains. The firm attributed the attack 'with high confidence' to TraderTraitor, a cryptocurrency-focused subunit of North Korea's state-sponsored Lazarus Group.
Attack Details
Most of the transfers occurred in the space of about 20 minutes from 8:05 p.m. UTC on Friday. The compromise originated from an engineer's laptop, which allowed the attackers to access and transfer the massive amount of cryptocurrency.
Historic Breach
This theft surpasses all previous cryptocurrency heists in both scale and sophistication. The incident highlights growing concerns about state-sponsored cyberattacks targeting cryptocurrency exchanges and the challenges in securing digital assets.
