Hackers stole US$6.3 billion from Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, in a record theft that analysts attributed to North Korea.

The theft, which unfolded in about 20 minutes late Thursday, bears similarities to previous large attacks blamed on North Korea, according to US blockchain analysis firms TRM Labs and Chainalysis. Both firms expressed high confidence that Pyongyang was responsible for the breach.

Market Impact

Cryptocurrency prices fell sharply following the news, with Bitcoin hitting a six-week low of US$76,368 and ether dropping more than 3 percent to a two-month low of US$2,178. BNB, Binance's native token, was down 5 percent over the past 24 hours at US$709.70.
