The biggest crypto hacks and heists in history – and where Binance's $6.3 billion breach ranks - The Independent
The world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, Binance, has experienced a security breach resulting in an estimated $6.3 billion impact, marking the biggest crypto heist in history.
Binance reported that they have worked with partners to freeze the affected assets, with about $3 billion located so far. No update was provided on the status of the remaining $3.3 billion. The breach has reignited concerns about the security of customer funds in the cryptocurrency industry, potentially causing investors to reassess the risks associated with digital assets.
Industry Response
The crypto industry has suffered a series of high-profile thefts in recent years. Yi He, Binance's co-founder, addressed the situation by stating that the company would cover 'all hacking losses,' attempting to reassure customers about their funds' security.
Major Crypto Hacks
Other significant crypto breaches include February 2025's $1.5 billion theft from Bybit, where hackers took digital tokens from a supposedly secure 'cold wallet.' In March 2022, the Ronin Network suffered a $540 million hack connected to Axie Infinity. February 2022 saw Wormhole lose $320 million, while Poly Network was hit for $610 million in August 2021, though most funds were later returned.
Earlier major incidents include Coincheck's $530 million theft in January 2018, which may have involved North Korean hackers, and Mt. Gox's collapse in 2014 after losing nearly $500 million in bitcoin, once handling 80% of global bitcoin trade.
