The Linux 7.4 kernel has introduced a significant RISC-V optimization that enables portable performance improvements by detecting hardware capabilities at run-time.
The RISC-V architecture changes were merged for the Linux 7.4 kernel with one particularly notable optimization. Previously, Linux 7.3 included a RISC-V optimization from Tenstorrent that could skip software aligning for kernels compiled on hardware supporting fast misaligned memory copies, potentially delivering up to 11% bandwidth improvement.
However, the Linux 7.3 implementation required this support to be compiled-in, limiting its portability across RISC-V kernel builds that might need to support hardware without fast unaligned access capabilities.
