Ukraine: Russian strike kills two teenage girls in Chernihiv
A Russian strike in Chernihiv killed two teenage girls as a separate ceasefire in southern Ukraine held for over 30 hours.
Firefighters responded to extinguish burning cars and flames from damaged buildings in Chernihiv following the attack, while emergency crews attended to victims among scattered debris. Footage from the scene showed rescuers carrying an injured person into an ambulance and a body covered by a blanket near the impact site.
Missile Attack Details
The local military administration confirmed the attack involved a Banderol cruise missile, an inexpensive jet-powered weapon capable of loitering before striking its target. Businesses, homes and vehicles were damaged in the strike that claimed the lives of two teenage girls.
Southern Ukraine Truce
The Chernihiv attack occurred as a US-brokered ceasefire in southern Ukraine continued to hold around the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky in the Kherson region. Ukrainian and Russian human rights ombudsmen reported the local truce had passed 30 hours without incident.
The operation is intended to open routes for humanitarian aid and allow residents who wish to leave to do so.
Humanitarian Situation
Around 2,000 people remain in Oleshky, where food, water and medicine have been scarce for months. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the respite but emphasized that civilian evacuation would be crucial to the truce's success.
