Personal information of thousands of DHS employees potentially leaked in data breach - Yahoo
Personal information of over 40,000 Department of Homeland Security employees was potentially leaked in a data breach, according to officials.
The leaked information includes names, phone numbers, email addresses, and job titles of employees from multiple federal agencies under DHS, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Customs and Border Protection, and Homeland Security Investigations. The data also reveals which agents were assigned to special operations, surveillance, computer forensics, and undercover work.
Hacktivist Claim
According to The Washington Post, a hacktivist group calling itself the Department of Peace claimed it accessed secure DHS databases through a single sign-on service used by federal workers. The group then shared the records with Distributed Denial of Secrets and Swiss hacker 'maia arson crimew.'
Official Response
The Department of Homeland Security acknowledged the potential breach in a statement, saying it was 'actively working to address the situation swiftly and effectively.' The agency promised to update the public as more information becomes available.
Data Accessibility
Distributed Denial of Secrets co-founder Emma Best confirmed the creation of a search tool for the leaked data, which she said would 'replace anonymity with accountability' and help journalists, guide public records requests, and boost congressional oversight.
