AMD has released FSR SDK 2.4, bringing machine-learning-powered upscaling 4.1.2 to Radeon RX 6000 GPUs and select Ryzen APUs, along with full Vulkan support and improved frame pacing.

The FSR "Redstone" SDK 2.4 represents AMD's latest advancement in upscaling technology, bringing FSR 4.1.2 to Radeon RX 6000 Series GPUs and select Ryzen APUs. The update marks a significant expansion of AMD's machine-learning-based upscaling capabilities beyond previous RDNA 3 and 4 architectures.

Expanded ML Support

FSR 4.1.2 introduces a full INT8 machine-learning model specifically for RDNA 2-based Radeon RX 6000 GPUs, extending support beyond the RX 7000 and RX 9000 families. The same model is also supported on Ryzen AI Max 300 and 400 Series processors with RDNA 3.5 integrated graphics.

For less powerful APUs, AMD has developed a lightweight INT8 model less than half the size of the full implementation, targeting Ryzen AI 9 300/400 processors and handheld-focused Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, Ryzen Z2 Extreme, and Ryzen Z2 A chips. Model selection occurs automatically based on hardware capabilities.

Vulkan Integration

The most significant technical addition is full Vulkan support at feature parity with DirectX 12 for FSR Upscaling and Frame Generation. This includes FSR Upscaling 4.1.2, FSR Frame Generation 4.0.2, and their respective analytical fallback implementations.

However, existing Vulkan games using FSR 3.1 won't automatically receive ML-based FSR through a driver update. Developers must integrate the new SDK to enable these features, though eligible Vulkan titles will subsequently support automatic upgrades through AMD's drivers.

Performance Improvements

SDK 2.4 introduces Driver-Assisted Frame Pacing with FSR Frame Generation 4.0.0, exclusively for Radeon RX 9000 Series GPUs and newer hardware. This feature shifts frame presentation timing from CPU-side busy waiting to the AMD display driver, improving frame delivery consistency while reducing CPU overhead.

The update also includes FSR Ray Regeneration 1.2.1 with standalone ambient occlusion and specular occlusion denoising, while the analytical FSR 3.1.6 upscaler receives precision and reprojection improvements. Ray Regeneration remains exclusive to RDNA 4 and newer GPUs with DirectX 12 support only.

FSR SDK 2.4 is now available through AMD's GitHub repository, including precompiled binaries and limited source code. The Unreal Engine plugin still uses FSR Upscaling 4.1.1 and Frame Generation 4.0.1, with an update planned for a later date.
