Chainlink News: Can CustodySync Unlock Institutional DeFi Lending? - Coin Gabbar
Chainlink has announced the live deployment of CustodySync, a system designed to enable qualified custodians to offer institutional clients access to decentralized finance lending while their assets remain under custody.
Anchorage Digital Bank, the home of the first federally chartered digital asset bank in the U.S., has been named the first qualified custodian to adopt CustodySync.
The system is intended to allow institutions to use their custodied assets as collateral for DeFi loans without moving the assets off the custodian's balance sheet.
Chainlink describes a five-stage workflow where collateral stays with the custodian, and its balance is published onchain through a Proof of Reserve mechanism.
How the System Works
A transfer-restricted receipt token is used within the lending integration to represent the custodied assets. This token carries no claim on the underlying assets outside of it.
For the borrowing stage, assets move to the borrower in one transaction, and the custodian's records are updated simultaneously.
Pricing is handled by a shared source that feeds both the onchain lending market and the custodian's offchain systems through Data Feeds and Data Streams.
If a loan breaches its liquidation threshold, the appointed collateral agent initiates a sale. CustodySync records the committed sale proceeds onchain, and the final debt repayment and settlement execute in a single atomic transaction.
What Is Confirmed and What Is Unknown
Chainlink's announcement confirms Anchorage Digital Bank as the launch partner and describes the intended workflow. It does not identify a live lending market, borrower, or completed loan.
Aave Labs separately published a September 14 proposal for an Aave V4 isolated market using custodied collateral, with an integration designed by Chainlink.
Aave's October development update described this work as a proposal progressing toward launch, not as a live market. The distinction is important: a named proposal shows that an integration is being considered, not that borrowing is available today.
Chainlink's own disclaimer states that features may vary by custodian and not all may be available at Anchorage.
Next Steps
The system's live deployment with Anchorage represents a significant step in bridging the gap between traditional custody and decentralized finance.
Until a protocol confirms the deployment of a live lending market and publishes operational details, readers should distinguish the announced framework from demonstrated adoption.
