Pendle's total value locked jumped 43% quarter-over-quarter to $1.16 billion in Q3 2026, despite cutting PENDLE token incentives by approximately 58%.

The yield-trading protocol's Q3 performance defies conventional DeFi growth patterns. While most protocols rely on token incentives to attract users, Pendle achieved significant growth while reducing its PENDLE token incentives by approximately 58%. This shift suggests a maturing protocol that can sustain itself without excessive token emissions.

The growth story centers on real-world assets (RWAs), which now dominate Pendle's ecosystem. By quarter's end, RWA markets constituted 82% of the protocol's total value locked, with tokenized dollars backed by RWAs adding $395 million during Q3 alone. These tokenized dollars finished the quarter at $949 million, with RWA-backed versions accounting for 85% of Pendle's top 50 markets.

Collateral expansion and tokenomics shift

Pendle's Principal Tokens (PTs) gained significant traction across DeFi platforms during Q3. Lenders more than doubled their acceptance of PTs as collateral, reaching approximately $497 million. This growth was driven by new listings on Morpho and integrations with Aave, expanding the utility of PTs beyond Pendle's ecosystem.

The protocol also shifted its tokenomics strategy, leaning heavily on buybacks. Pendle repurchased 3.2 tokens for every one it distributed in incentives, up from 1.6 in Q2. This buyback ratio benefits stakers, as 80% of retained fees are directed toward these repurchases. However, V2 revenue fell to $2 million as trading fees declined, potentially straining future buyback capacity.

Critical test ahead

The Q3 growth represents a significant rebound from a two-year low of $812 million on June 30, marking Pendle's first quarterly gain since September 2025. Looking ahead, Q4 presents a critical test for the protocol. Approximately $1.06 billion, or 91% of TVL as of September 30, is set to mature by December 17, including $236 million from re.xyz due on December 10.

For PENDLE holders, the buyback ratio remains the key metric to monitor. While buybacks currently outpace new supply from incentives, this ratio could weaken if fee income continues to decline. The expanding role of PTs as collateral on other platforms could help with user retention, as holders using PTs as borrowing collateral have stronger incentives to roll into new maturities rather than cashing out.
