NetBSD adds nano-like text editor to base system
NetBSD has announced the addition of atto(1), a user-friendly command-line text editor similar to nano, to its base system installation.
The addition of atto(1) represents a significant improvement in user experience for the operating system. Most guides and tutorials for NetBSD assume users are comfortable with vi, which can be challenging for newcomers. The new editor provides a more approachable alternative while maintaining the lightweight nature required for a base system installation.
Lightweight Alternative
Atto is a modeless screen-based editor similar to nano, pico, xedit, or emacs. Its small size of only 48 kilobytes makes it suitable for inclusion in the rescue system, ensuring users have access to a user-friendly text editor even in recovery scenarios.
To ease the transition for new users, NetBSD -current now includes an alternative editor to vi(1) and xedit(1) in its base system, atto(1).
Community Response
The announcement has been well-received by the community, with many users expressing excitement about trying the new editor. While other tech news focuses on hardware additions like touch screens, this software enhancement addresses fundamental usability concerns in the operating system.
