The London Metal Exchange is studying how digital tokens could represent metal in Hong Kong warehouses, with a pilot planned for 2027.

The exchange is looking at putting metal on a blockchain. Specifically, it is exploring the tokenization of off-warrant metal held in Hong Kong warehouses, with the goal of supporting financing and opening up a fresh revenue stream. The idea was outlined by LME executive Hugo Brodie at the Tokenised Markets and Money Conference on October 23, 2026.

According to the research findings, the exchange plans to pilot its tokenization efforts in 2027. Nothing is live yet. No tokens exist, and no tokenized products have launched. For now, this is a study, not a product rollout.

Tokenization aims

On the LME, a warrant is the document that represents ownership of metal sitting in an exchange-approved warehouse. Off-warrant metal is inventory stored outside that formal system. It exists physically, but it does not carry the same standardized paperwork that exchange-registered stock does.

The LME's stated aims include faster ownership transfers, easier verification of metal location and ownership, making off-warrant stock more usable as collateral for loans, and reducing fraud risks tied to warehouse receipts.

Hong Kong focus

As of May 2026, LME CEO Matthew Chamberlain said approved warehouse capacity in Hong Kong had increased rapidly. The target is more than 100,000 tonnes of storage, spread across multiple operational sites holding metals including copper, aluminum, and nickel.

The research findings tie the initiative to illiquidity problems in metal markets at a moment when artificial intelligence and data center buildouts are driving up appetite for industrial metals.

The LME has emphasized that trust between buyers and sellers, along with clearly defined legal rights, will be central to any move toward tokenized assets. The research findings note that the LME is awaiting further consultations and studies before refining its strategy.

Market impact

The things to watch are concrete. First, whether the LME publishes consultation details that spell out how token ownership would be legally recognized. Second, which warehouses and which metals are included when the 2027 pilot begins. Third, whether lenders actually show up to finance tokenized inventory, since financing was one of the stated goals from the start.
