Lido Says Institutional Staking Drew $25 Billion This Year, Speeding Ethereum's Shift Into Financial Infrastructure [Engineered: Profiles in Blockchain Architecture] - bloomingbit
Institutional staking inflows have reached about $25 billion this year, helping Ethereum develop into financial infrastructure, according to Will Shannon, head of staking at Lido Labs.
Lido, the world's largest liquid staking protocol accounting for about 22% of all staked Ether, is playing a pivotal role in Ethereum's development as financial infrastructure. The protocol has seen significant institutional interest this year, with approximately $25 billion flowing into staking markets, according to Will Shannon, head of staking at Lido Labs.
Shannon emphasized that Ethereum is becoming the core foundation for financial services like asset tokenization, payments, and settlement. 'Ethereum will become the core foundation on which financial services such as asset tokenization, payments and settlement are built,' he stated. 'Its potential use in finance is already the clearest.'

Liquid Staking Revolution
Lido addresses the high barrier to entry in Ethereum staking by allowing users to stake smaller amounts and receive stETH in return. Previously, direct staking required at least 32 Ether (approximately $79,000) and locked assets, making them difficult to use elsewhere.
The protocol's innovation lies in its liquid staking model, where users can stake any amount of Ether and receive stETH tokens that represent their staked assets plus accumulated rewards. This token can then be used as collateral in DeFi platforms like Aave or swapped for other cryptocurrencies without unstaking, allowing users to maintain liquidity while earning staking rewards.
Decentralization Efforts
Lido operates through a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) where governance token holders make key decisions collectively, preventing power concentration. The protocol has recently implemented two major changes to strengthen decentralization: the Community Staking Module (CSM) and dual governance.
CSM has expanded validator participation from 34 professional operators to over 600 by allowing individuals to run validators directly. The 0x02 CSM version supports up to 2,048 Ether per validator, improving efficiency. Dual governance addresses potential conflicts between LDO token holders and stETH users by implementing an on-chain check-and-balance system.
Institutional Growth
About 55% of the $25 billion came from BitMine, the world's largest corporate Ethereum treasury holder that owns approximately 5% of Ethereum's circulating supply.
He emphasized that diversification remains crucial even as institutional participation grows. 'If institutional capital becomes concentrated among a small number of node operators, that could create risk for Ethereum,' Shannon warned. Recent institutional allocations include $200 million from SharpLink to wstETH and growing adoption of WisdomTree's Europe-based ETP linked to Lido.
South Korean Market
While acknowledging positive moves by South Korean financial institutions toward digital asset adoption, Shannon identified regulatory barriers that limit market growth. 'South Korea does not yet have a clear timetable for allowing financial institutions to hold spot digital assets,' he noted, adding that these restrictions also impede the introduction of spot Bitcoin and Ether ETFs.
Despite these challenges, Lido is expanding its product offerings beyond liquid staking. The protocol is preparing to launch Lido Lend, a decentralized lending protocol, and plans to announce several new products within the next two months. Shannon expressed hope that regulatory improvements will eventually enable South Korean investors to access stETH through traditional financial markets.
