Canonical Reviving Their Immutable Ubuntu Core Desktop
Canonical is reviving Ubuntu Core Desktop, their immutable Linux desktop OS, with plans to accelerate development for the Ubuntu 27.04 cycle.
Canonical engineers initially outlined plans for Ubuntu Core Desktop in 2023 as an immutable Linux desktop option. While initial progress was made, development went silent in 2024. Now, Canonical is reviving this project with ambitious plans for the future, focusing on three specific use-cases during the Ubuntu 27.04 cycle.
Development Focus
Jon Seager, VP of Engineering at Canonical, shared the renewed development plans, acknowledging that the 2023 preview "fell short" of their vision. The team will concentrate on browser-centric machines, developer workstations, and gaming machines as primary targets.
Ubuntu Desktop in its present form is not going away. However, this might be the most exciting thing I've been able to announce since taking the lead of Ubuntu.
Technical Challenges
Canonical faces several key challenges in bringing Ubuntu Core Desktop to market. Application availability, particularly in Snap form, remains a major blocker. Other challenges include modularizing the desktop, handling permission prompting, and ensuring proper support for both KDE Plasma and GNOME environments.
The company has established a new Ubuntu Core Desktop team to revive the 2023 preview and re-establish production pipelines for immutable images. Daily builds of Ubuntu Core Desktop are expected during the Ubuntu 27.04 development cycle.
