London Broncos to go without £1.3m RFL funding if they enter Super League next year

London Broncos have agreed to enter Super League in 2027 without the £1.3m central distribution funding received by other clubs, as the 14 existing teams set strict terms for their expansion.

The Broncos' decision comes despite the Rugby Football League expected to ratify their elevation to the expanded 15-team competition imminently. The move follows a failed agreement between Super League and the NRL for an administrative partnership that would have injected tens of millions of pounds into the English game, though the Australian governing body will still assist in broadcasting four Super League games per week on DAZN next year.

Financial Terms

Many top-flight clubs were aware the NRL would insist on London's inclusion when the partnership eventually begins. Despite the partnership delay until 2028, Super League clubs informed the Broncos they would include them only if they accepted zero central distribution. The other 14 clubs currently receive around £1.3m in funding, while London would have received approximately £140,000 had they remained in the Championship.

Expansion Process

York Knights and Toulouse Olympique joined Super League this year with half the central distribution of other teams, around £650,000. Super League clubs can only decide on the league size, not handpick new teams. The RFL will use the IMG gradings system to determine the 15th team, with London set to be approached after Barrow Raiders, who finished 15th this year, declined entry due to inadequate facilities.
