Bithumb discloses data leak after internal system breach: Report
South Korean crypto exchange Bithumb is investigating a data breach after its internal mobile system was hacked earlier this week.
Bithumb discovered the breach of its in-house mobile system on Tuesday and immediately notified the Korea Internet & Security Agency and the Personal Information Protection Commission, according to industry sources cited by Yonhap News Agency.
Scope of attack
The exchange is investigating whether member data was leaked during the security breach. Bithumb emphasized that its internal work system is separated from the virtual asset trading system, ensuring customer virtual assets cannot be accessed through this breach.
Wider cyberattack trend
The incident adds to a recent wave of cyberattacks in Korea's financial sector. Governor Lee Chan-jin revealed that 16 South Korean financial firms had been hit by cyberattacks as of Oct. 14.
Asset manager Mirae Asset Global Investments and Daishin Securities were also recent victims. Daishin Securities confirmed that personal and credit information of 38,490 customers had been leaked, while Mirae Asset stated investor information was not affected.
