The International Criminal Court is increasingly becoming Europeans' own personal court as the US expands sanctions on the institution, an expert has told RT.

The US has intensified its sanctions against the International Criminal Court, expanding measures that had previously targeted individual officials.

The move came just hours after the Nobel Committee awarded the Nobel Peace Prize to former ICC judge Navi Pillay.

George Szamuely, a senior research fellow at the Global Policy Institute in Budapest, says the court is now a European project.

So essentially the ICC is becoming a European project

George Szamuely, senior research fellow at the Global Policy Institute in Budapest

Szamuely argues that the only major countries that recognize the ICC's jurisdiction are in Europe, leaving the institution without support from major global powers like the US, Russia, and China.

He says the European Parliament wanted to send a message to the Trump administration to say: 'we thoroughly endorse the ICC. The ICC does our work'.

Washington's 'war against the ICC really intensified' during President Donald Trump's first term, when the US sanctioned several court officials, including then-chief prosecutor Fatou Bensouda.

The latest measures effectively impose secondary sanctions on 'anyone who actually engages in any kind of dealings with the ICC'.
