Code Verification In The Agentic Era
AI coding agents have transformed software development by increasing code output but also creating verification challenges as bugs multiply.
In the past, code was expensive to write but cheap to review. An engineer would spend days writing a feature, then another engineer would spend an hour reviewing the change line by line. AI coding agents have flipped that ratio. Today, a single engineer often uses multiple agents to produce code in parallel. Even if the rate of bugs remains the same as before, more output equals more bugs reaching production.
Data confirms this problem. A 2026 study found that for every $1 companies spent on AI tokens, $0.44 was wasted on fixing bugs. Reviewing the code carefully just does not scale anymore. So what does verification look like when humans can no longer afford to read every line?
