Capcom Confirms Data Breach That Affected 11.7 Million Users - Engadget
Capcom has confirmed a massive data breach that affected more than 11.7 million users of its online membership service, Capcom ID.
The breach included millions of account emails, as well as birth dates, gender, country or region, and nicknames of 43 accounts, along with unauthorized changes to 196 account passwords. However, Capcom emphasized that customer credit card information was not compromised in this incident.
Detection and Response
The company detected suspicious activity indicating potential unauthorized access on October 19 and immediately blocked access. Capcom launched an investigation into the cause and scope of the incident, reported it to local police, and notified its external advisory board for security oversight.
Ongoing Services and Risks
Despite the breach, all services using Capcom ID remain operational, including games like Street Fighter 6 that require it for online play. However, Capcom warned users to be cautious of suspicious emails, as the leaked information could be used to send scam emails impersonating the company.
This incident follows a similar data breach at Rockstar Games in April, where the company confirmed it was hit by a "third-party data breach," highlighting ongoing security challenges in the gaming industry.
