CoW, which (sort-of) brings FVWM to Wayland, reaches version 0.4
Thomas Adam, core developer of FVWM, has released version 0.4 of CoW, a project that brings FVWM functionality to Wayland using the River compositor.
Thomas Adam, one of the core developers of FVWM, has been working on CoW for some time, with version 0.4 now released. CoW can best be described as 'FVWM for Wayland', which uniquely utilizes the River compositor. River stands out by not combining the compositor and window manager into a single program, allowing for a more traditional X11-like approach.
Container Windows
The new version comes with numerous fixes, changes, and minor improvements, along with a significant feature: container windows. This PR introduces the concept of a top-level container window, allowing a window to be subdivided into columns and rows (called panes) that can be resized independently of one another.
The idea for this has been unashamedly stolen from shod.
Future Development
The project continues to evolve with interest from the community. One observer noted they've been following CoW since its initial release and plan to build a desktop around it soon. This approach represents an interesting alternative in the Wayland ecosystem, particularly for those who prefer more traditional window management approaches.
